This year, for the first time, Belgian farmers were able to take out comprehensive weather insurance. More than 3.000 farmers have taken advantage of this insurance, which should protect them against damage caused by drought, storms or hail, among other things. According to the Flemish agriculture minister Hilde Crevits it is a 'good result for the first year.'
Previously, agricultural entrepreneurs in Belgium could count on compensation from the Flemish government in the event of damage caused by drought or precipitation. This has changed since 2020, farmers are encouraged to take out broad weather insurance with a private insurer, just like in the Netherlands. To encourage people to take out insurance, the government subsidizes 65% of the premium. A total amount of €31 million will be paid out on 14,5 December. Of this, 65% is subsidized, or €9,4 million.
Most broad weather insurance policies were taken out in West Flanders, namely 1.038 units. This is followed by East Flanders (625) and Antwerp (525). It is striking that entrepreneurs mainly choose to insure maize and grassland, which together account for approximately 52.000 hectares. Cereals (8.600 hectares) and potatoes (7.000 hectares) are in 2nd and 3rd place. Of the total area of grassland, flax and hemp, 20% is insured against damage.
