The Dutch Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA) has informed Cosun Beet Company that there will be no exemption for Cruiser SB in sugar beet. According to the service, an exemption does not meet the agricultural criteria that have been drawn up for this purpose.
Cosun had requested a transition exemption for the use of Cruiser in pill seed, emphasizing that the dosage involved a lower dose than before. In this way, the organization hoped to better overcome the problems in beet cultivation with soil insects and the yellowing virus. The NVWA has now announced that an exemption from Cruiser does not meet the agricultural criteria and is therefore not possible.
Disappointed with decision
Of course, Cosun is disappointed. All the more so because the NVWA writes that the yellowing virus cannot be controlled well with the current crop protection products. "That should be a reason to shy away from an exemption," says Cosun. On the other hand, the NVWA states that it does not expect that sufficient alternative control options will be available during the transition period (of 3 years). "We do not share that opinion," said Cosun.
That is why Cosun continues to plead for extra money for research into alternative solutions. In addition, Cosun has also applied for an exemption for Batavia and Closer. "These are crucial in the control of green aphids, especially now that there is no exemption for the use of Cruiser in pill seed."
