Christmas doesn't tickle organic markets yet

16 December 2020 - Redactie Boerenbusiness

For the time being, Christmas has not had a contagious effect on the markets for organic potatoes, carrots and onions. Although the upcoming holidays will result in slightly more demand for organic onions, this has little effect on the price.

This is shown by the DCA Indication Prices for these organic products, which DCA-Markets has been compiling since last week. These generally reflect a stable market for organic potatoes, onions and carrots. The lockdown in the Netherlands has had little effect on this for the time being. The hamster effect, as could be seen with the first lockdown last spring, is now absent. At least that's how the first signs are.

Equal price range in organic onions
Traders in organic onions see slightly more demand in the market for organic onions in the run-up to Christmas. However, this does not mean that buyers will pay more for it. The coarser onions (more than 60% coarse) field crop from a Dutch company have prices of €32 to €35 per 100 kilos. The prices for the less coarse onions (>30%) are at more or less the same price level. This means that the price range of these quotations is the same as last week's.

Greater demand for carrots expected
In any case, there is no sign of an increasing demand in organic carrots. This is expected at the beginning of the year, but this week carrots are not affected. The DCA indication prices do not change either and, just like last week, they are from €25 to €30 per 100 kilos for good quality B-carrots/dish cups. By way of comparison: the DCA quotation for common B-peen last Friday was €13. There has also been little price movement there in recent weeks.

Barely trade in table potatoes
The market for table potatoes also has a small lockdown. There is little demand for organic table potatoes. As a result, there is hardly any trade at a level of around €25 per 100 kilos for both floury and waxy potatoes.

The picture therefore concerns a market that seems to be quietly rippling through the year, waiting for demand from abroad. Many believe it will come early next year.
