It remains calm in the market for organic onions, carrots and table potatoes. While last week there was still a little bit of action due to Christmas, that is certainly not the case this week. What does this mean for the DCA indication prices?
There is little domestic demand and there is almost no need for Dutch products from abroad during this period. This trend corresponds to the picture in the market for conventional carrots in particular, where there is also little incentive for an improvement in demand.
Organic onions unchanged
There is hardly any trade in organic onions. A pallet here and there, notes an insider. Looking at the time of year with all its public holidays, this is not a special picture for week 52. That has actually been the case for years, where about 15 years ago people sometimes worked hard to get orders out on Christmas Eve.
The market indicates that the price range for organic onions has remained the same. The DCA indication prices for organic onions (more than 60% coarse), field crop from a Dutch company, quote prices from €32 to €35 per 100 kilos. The prices for the less coarse onions (>30%) are at more or less the same price level. So unchanged from the previous 2 weeks. The impulse, it is said, must come from Germany. Due to an increase in demand from our eastern neighbours, prices may also rise a bit here in January. In any case, this is the conservative expectation.
No impulses for organic carrots yet
The same applies to organic carrots as to organic onions. No impulse for higher prices, so no interest in selling large volumes. The DCA indication prices therefore do not change and, just like the previous 2 weeks, they range from €25 to €30 per 100 kilos for good quality B-carrots/dish cups. Here too, we have to wait for demand from abroad.
Organic table potato hardly asked for
It is also quiet in the market for organic table potatoes. Apparently everyone has enough stock. What differs is that there is little optimism in this segment for a pick-up in demand in the short term. The market is desperately looking for bright spots, but is not yet seeing them.
The price level is also no different from the past few weeks. Floury and waxy potatoes are now worth about €25 per 100 kilos. The market picture is expected to remain calm in the coming weeks.
