Organic markets are waiting

30 December 2020

There is still a calm atmosphere on the organic market for carrots, onions and potatoes. It is clear that this year there was no question of a so-called 'Christmas peak' or 'New Year's peak'. Still, the sentiment for onions seems to be tilting slightly. What do the DCA indication prices show?

While last week there was talk of onion prices between €32 and €35, the product is now expected to be held at that price pending better times. According to various insiders, the tipping point is in the vicinity of $40 this week, although no buyers have yet signed up for that price. This is because, when it comes to organic onions, there are still plenty of parties on the market that have something wrong with them. A higher price is charged for good quality organic onions.

According to insiders, this 'turning around each other' can sometimes take a while, because buyers don't feel pressure. The market is therefore somewhere between €35 and €40 per 100 kilos for good quality and delivery within 3 weeks.

Unchanged carrot market
The market for organic carrots shows an unchanged picture this week. The price range is therefore (just like last week) between €25 and €30 per 100 kilos. When there is so little trading, it is difficult to determine where the market is moving in the coming period. If demand from Germany in particular increases and when growers can wait, there will be room to trade at the higher end of the aforementioned range.

Waiting for demand for organic potatoes
The organic market for potatoes is waiting for demand. This also concerns demand from Germany. However, unlike the market for onions and carrots, it is not expected that demand will pick up quickly. "Apparently they have more than enough product", sighs a trader. Without any incentive, the price will remain this week at around €25 per 100 kilos for both waxy potatoes and floury potatoes.

The market for organic potatoes is not expected to move for the time being. In addition, growers have the luxury of being able to wait a little longer for better times. After the holidays there will undoubtedly be more activity on the market, but it remains to be seen whether the market will loosen up.
