Cosun Beet Company is very disappointed that Minister Carola Schouten has decided not to grant an exemption for Cruiser SB. The organization has been afraid for some time that this will create an uneven playing field between beet growers in Europe.
In many other European countries, including our neighboring countries, exemptions are granted. Cosun finds it remarkable that in her response Schouten indicates that he does not wish to deviate from European policy and that he does not wish to make use of the possibility of derogation in advance. "The position of Dutch beet growers is being jeopardized as a result," says Cosun.
Alternatives
With the drug Cruiser SB, Cosun hoped to better cope with problems with soil insects and the yellowing virus. The transition exemption has been requested for the use of Cruiser SB in pill seed, emphasizing that the dosage is lower than before. "It is important to accelerate efforts to find alternative solutions," Cosun reported.
"Crop damage from the yellowing disease, in combination with the climate and market effects, is putting sugar beet cultivation under pressure." The beet organization is now trying to clarify the applications for the exemption for Batavia and Closer as soon as possible.
