Mood in organic markets is slowly coming in

13 January 2021

The organic markets for onions and carrots are gradually becoming more active. But the table potatoes will remain behind the shelves for the time being.

The market for organic onions is characterized by increasing demand, mainly from the United Kingdom and Germany. The story goes that prices are being offered that were significantly above last week's. This upward movement is encouraged by the lack of supply. Onions for direct farm/cooling currently sell for an average of about €42.

In any case, there is the idea among growers and traders that prices will continue to rise. "The season is still long," said a trader. The question then is where the ceiling is and just as important: when will it be achieved? A question that regularly comes up with growers, of course.

In a market situation like this it is very difficult for the market to indicate a price level. At the moment the DCA Indication Price for 'discount within 3 weeks' is between €42 and €44 for fine/medium lots. Grover is slightly less in demand and should yield between €38 and €42 per 100 kilos. All in all, a nice plus with favorable prospects for growers.

Prices for carrots are also picking up slightly
The carrot market seems to be benefiting from the fact that buyers are becoming more active. This leads to a positive sentiment, where growers dare to ask for more and in some cases also manage to realize that plus. Here too, volumes are still low and real trading has yet to erupt. Because the sales season in carrots will also take some time, both buyers and, apparently, also sellers, have patience.

The market for organic carrots is trading this week in a range that has risen slightly to DCA Indication prices of €28 to €32 per 100 kilos. A big €2 higher than last week.

Little news about organic table potatoes
'Not really news' is what the market mainly reports when it comes to the trade in waxy and floury table potatoes. The demand that is still expected from Germany is still not forthcoming. Apparently the eastern neighbors still have enough product themselves, is the prevailing view. It is of course also possible that they source the potatoes from elsewhere, but there are few or no signs of this. Waiting is therefore the motto for Dutch owners of these potatoes. And no indication yet that major price swings are on the way.

The market is calm and the price range remains the same as last week on DCA Indication prices of €25 to €28 per 100 kilos.
