Organic markets stable to firm

20 January 2021

The mood on the organic markets for onions and carrots remains fairly stable. For table potatoes, there is still little to no action and everyone seems to be sufficiently 'covered'. What are the DCA Indication prices doing this week?

It seems that the market for organic onions is becoming more and more commotion. Buyers are exploring the market and sporadically doing business at a price level a few euros above last week's market. There is resistance in the market against really higher prices, because this cannot be justified further down the chain. "They can't pay much more either," explains a trader.

At the moment, deliveries are mainly from programs and trading 'for immediate' is limited. Everyone seems well covered for now. It remains to be seen whether there will be much room up in the coming week. Insiders put the market at a level between €43 and €46 for fine/medium lots, ex grower and delivered within 3 weeks. The top only applies to first quality. It is more difficult to get a price for coarser, but it comes out somewhere between €38 and €44 per 100 kilos.

Carrot market maintains self-confidence
Little has changed in the market for organic carrots. The undertone remains positive, but this has not yet led to a real spectacle. The idea remains that better prices can be made later in the season, but the fact is that there is not yet a great demand. On the other hand, the season is still long. Everyone, including abroad, seems to be sufficiently covered to meet demand for the time being. The demand that there is comes mainly from Germany and partly from Great Britain. The price level as indicated by the market has not changed. The DCA Indication price for organic carrots therefore remains at €28 to €32 per 100 kilos.

Organic table potatoes next week
"The story for this week is the same as last week and the weeks before," said a market expert. Organic table potatoes are not or hardly traded. The permanent contracts provide sufficient cover for the underlying demand. So little reason for the market to jump out of the band. The market is calm and the price range for the DCA Indication prices remains the same as last week with very little 'direct trade': €25 to €28 per 100 kilos. This applies to both the crumbly type and the waxy type.
