Seed onions yield drops 4 percent

29 January 2021 - Jurphaas Lugtenburg - 1 reaction

The yield of seed onions fell by 2020 percent in 4 compared to a year earlier, Statistics Netherlands reported. As a result, Statistics Netherlands has adjusted the harvest estimate downwards. In October, it was still assuming a 1,4 percent decline. The harvest estimate for ware potatoes remains virtually the same. That of sugar beet is going up.

At the end of October, Statistics Netherlands estimated the provisional gross yield of seed onions at 1.350.337 tons. A decrease of 1,4%. That figure has been adjusted on January 29 to 1.314.409 tons. A difference of almost 36.000 tons, or 2,6%. This means that the 2020 harvest will be 4% lower compared to 2019. This is because the weather conditions in the spring resulted in a larger crop failure.

However, the yield is above the 10-year average, due to a steady growth of the acreage. In 2020, the harvested area decreased by 1,1%.

onion sets
In 2020, 27.300 hectares of seed onions were harvested, yielding an average gross yield of 49 tons. The yield of second-year onion sets was measured for the first time last year. That comes to 283.000 tons.

Potatoes
The yield of ware potatoes changes slightly compared to the preliminary estimate. At the end of October, the estimate was 3,7 million tons. Now that is 3.682.556 tons of 75.790 hectares. A decrease of 2,2% in area and 0,9% in yield compared to 2019. The seed potato yield comes to 1,5 million tons, which is almost 40.000 tons below 2019. The acreage remained stable. The yield of starch potatoes amounts to 1,83 million tons. A year earlier, that was 132.000 tons more or 2,3%.

Bad wheat year
in 2020, 1 million hectares of wheat were harvested in the Netherlands. That is 17,6% less than in 2019. The winter wheat yield in particular was disappointing. 22,5% less was harvested. The yield of spring wheat increased by 70%. Due to the wet autumn of 2019, less winter wheat was sown and much more summer grain. The acreage of spring wheat almost doubled and that of spring barley rose by almost a third. The barley yield increased slightly to 300.000 tons. In total, 4% less grain was grown last year.

The sugar beet acreage has grown by 2020% in 3 to 81.500 hectares. The total yield in 2020 amounted to 6,75 million tons. An increase of 1,6% with 2019. This brings the hectare yield to 82,9 tons per hectare.
