The market for organic onions, carrots and table potatoes is slowing down a bit. It is typical of this period, but there is also little demand. It is simply difficult for the organic product to find its way to end users.
The cold stores are full and there is simply less consumption. The latter is due to the corona virus, which means that 'out of home' turnover has partly disappeared. This will remain the case for large parts of Europe, at least in the coming months. The price level of the DCA Indication Prices is therefore predictable.
Little demand for free onions
On the market for organic onions, quite a bit is processed from contracts, but there is little demand for free onions. Where otherwise a packer sometimes asks for an extra truck or the wholesaler knocks on the door, it is now mostly quiet. Something is sold around €0,50 per kilo, market parties report, but it is not much. The bottom of the market is also quiet.
Now it is not the case that the mood is negative. Growers still have high expectations, but whether these are fulfilled remains to be seen. Perhaps something could happen at the end of February, causing trade to go wild. The DCA indication prices are for >30% coarse €45 to €50 per 100 kilos. The coarse onions are slightly below that. The DCA Indication Price is €43 to €49. The prices are exclusive of VAT for B and Carrot Bowls, Class I.
Carrot: delayed question
The trade in organic carrots is calm. The price level that is occasionally traded at has not really changed in recent times. That is actually just like in the usual carrot. In both markets, this mood stems from the fact that there is little demand on the part of end-users. In addition, there is sufficient stock in the trade channels, which is effortlessly maintained from the long-term contracts.
This is no different in the export market. 'Not much to say about it other than quiet and more or less the same story as last week', is mostly the comment from the market. The mood is therefore currently interpreted as calm. The DCA Indication price for organic carrots remains unchanged compared to last week: from €25 to €30 per 100 kilos.
Table potatoes: few incentives
The situation in the table potato market has not changed much either. Buyers do not have to buy on the free market yet and most growers will keep the potatoes in storage for a while without any problems. It is not clear when this status quo will be broken. Parties close to the market indicate that this can take a while. The DCA Indication Price for table potatoes also remains unchanged at €25 to €28 per 100 kilos. This applies to both floury and waxy potatoes from 35 to 65 mm.
