Acreage of sugar beet remains virtually the same

4 February 2021 - Jurphaas Lugtenburg

Cosun Beet Company is already preparing for the new season. The company reports that approximately 86.000 units of beet seed have already been ordered. Cosun's agricultural department is preparing to get the ordered seed to the growers before March 10, despite the corona measures.

Based on the orders and the outstanding allocations, Cosun assumes that the sugar beet acreage in 2021 will not differ much from last year. Growers who have not yet ordered seed can still do so, but the number of varieties currently available is limited.

Popular beet cyst nematode resistant varieties
Beet cyst nematode-resistant (BCA) varieties are especially popular this year. The share is 47% this year, compared to 2020% in 38. Last year, insufficient seed was available in this segment. At 36%, the share of Rhizoctonia-resistant varieties is virtually the same as in 2020. Rhizomania-resistant varieties were less popular. Their share fell from 25% last year to 17% this year. Varieties with triple resistance (rhizoctonia, BCA and additional rhizomania) make up 10% of the market. Tessilia KWS, Caprianna KWS and Edonia KWS are the largest varieties this year with 18%, 14% and 7% respectively.
