Duist is still one of the biggest problem weeds in grain. But it's not expanding as much as it was a few years ago. Targeted weed control in autumn and spring is the key to successfully controlling blackness.
A lot of winter wheat was sown early in 2020. Later plots due to precipitation or, for example, beet cultivation, are of course also available. In general, the autumn weed control with Herald happened early in 2020 (see Figure 1).
Early weed control of dusk
Most growers choose to spray with a soil herbicide in the autumn after sowing Herald to be carried out. This removes the vast majority of weeds that have emerged – and in particular darkness – early on. And with the humid weather we've had, a good performance seems more or less guaranteed.
Overall, you can say that plots with little or no darkness can currently be kept reasonably clean using the available chemistry and possible cultivation measures, such as crop rotation. But plots that are already heavily polluted with blackness are increasingly faced with resistance to herbicides, which actually only makes the problem worse. You have to fight Duist as completely as possible, otherwise you will only encourage the selection of resistant dark.
Also the spring control of darkness with oa Atlantis star of Othello remains an important measure. The success of such a spring spraying is crucial to prevent further selection of resistant black frost. Both Atlantis star as Othello work best in high humidity. Spraying early in the morning is therefore strongly recommended; the effect of these agents is then optimal.
In addition to grasses, don't forget broadleaf weeds!
The time when we can carry out weed control in summer and winter wheat seems far away at the moment. But due to the mild weather of the last few weeks, the weeds have already developed considerably. If the weather changes and the land is drivable, it will be necessary to act quickly.
Annual meadow grass, dusk, windhalm, but also storage of rye grasses, are the most important grasses in Dutch wheat crops. In addition, we also want to adequately control broad-leaved weeds such as chamomile, cleavers (see figure 2), purple deadnettle and speedwell species at the same time.
Atlantis star of Othello are widely applicable for those plots where sensitive dusk occurs in combination with annual meadow grass, but also the various broadleaf weeds. The present TCM, thiencarbazone-methyl, makes the action broader and more reliable on both grasses and broadleafs.
In the presence of ivy price and small ragwort, Atlantis star frequently used with Capri Twin.
