Play it safe when fighting weeds in winter grain

10 March 2021

When the land has dried up a bit and the winter grain is growing well, the weeds will also grow. Now is the time to start weed control.

Most winter grain plots contain both broadleaf weeds and weed grasses. In addition, the cultivation of a successful green manure after grain is an important aspect of the cropping plan and soil fertility. For weed control in winter cereals, the advice is to opt for a herbicide with a broad effect, but a short after-effect in the soil. The latter because of the safety for progeny crops and green manures.

Corteva has listed the most common weeds in winter cereals. View the weeds and the best control options in the brochure Weed control in winter grain and summer grain. The brochure also contains susceptibility tables for various herbicides in grain.

Most ideal conditions for weed control
When controlling weeds in grains, choice of means is important. It is just as important to deal with weather and crop conditions as effectively as possible.

  1. For an optimal result, it is important that the active substances are well absorbed by the weeds. In terms of spraying conditions, it is especially important that the weather is fertile; daytime temperatures of >10 °C, no night frost and relative humidity (RH) >60%.
Spraying in the morning on a still slightly damp crop (end of leaf wet) at relatively high RH is ideal for good results.
  2. Young seed weeds are more sensitive than larger weeds. Strive to carry out a control in a timely manner. Most weeds are most sensitive between the 2 and 6 leaf stage. For root weeds and potato storage, it is important that the plants have more leaves for effective spraying. Read here how to properly control potato storage and root weeds in grain.

Capri Twin: effective against weeds in grains
Capri Twin has a broad effect on broadleaf and grassy weeds. The advantage of this agent is that it has a relatively short after-effect in the soil. This makes it easier to control root weeds in May and there are no problems with post-grown green manures. The cultivation of a successful green manure after grain is becoming an increasingly important aspect of the crop plan and soil fertility. Capri Twin can be used in winter wheat, triticale, winter rye, spelled as well as in summer wheat. Capri Twin is not safe for barley and oats!
