Organic markets remain slack

18 March 2021

The organic markets for Dutch table potatoes, onions and carrots are not really getting going. Storing is still good in itself, but in about 3 to 4 weeks a new harvest will be added to the European supply. Dutch product must then match this in price.

It therefore seems that the real high outliers in price this year are no longer in it, according to the tests in the market. How are the markets doing and what are the DCA Indication Prices doing?

Fairly large range of organic onions
Growers of organic onions will offer their product more on the market, with the asking price being €45 per 100 kilos. Buyers do not want to pay that at the moment, as can be heard in the trade. They think this price is too high, so they don't buy more. Buyers are just as happy to wait for onions from Egypt, which will be on the market in 3 or 4 weeks. It is apparently expected that those onions will become available for prices below €45.

So the mood is also calm. Something does happen here and there, but that is mainly at parties that are 'lesser' in the meantime. It remains to be seen how the prices will develop in the coming weeks, but there is a good chance that it will remain at the level of the DCA Indication price for the coming period of €40 to €43 per 100 kilos for >30% coarse. The coarser onions are worth €38 to €41 per 100 kilos.

Organic carrot attracts something
Not much is happening in the market for organic carrots, but the market is improving. The fact that Israel and Spain will be offering carrots in about 3 weeks does put some pressure on the market. But carrot suppliers are not yet inclined to lower their prices.

The parties again keep it at an unchanged price. The DCA Indication Price for good quality (class I) organic carrots therefore remains unchanged at €25 to €30 per 100 kilos.

table potatoes
The market for organic table potatoes is unchanged. Market parties are also not sure what to make of it. Loss of quality with longer storage does not yet play a major role, but the question is whether this will remain the case. For now, the market is trading unchanged at a DCA Indication Price of €25 to €28 per 100 kilos. This applies to floury and waxy potatoes in the size 35 to 65 mm. The mood is hesitant with little trade.
