Sowing sugar beet is well underway. Cosun reports that more than 15% of the acreage was sown at the beginning of this week. There are, however, major differences between areas in the Netherlands. In the southwest the counter stood at 33%, while in the northeast it was about 5%.
According to Cosun, making a good seed bed is much easier than last year. The ground falls neatly and in many cases one pass is sufficient for a good seedbed. At the current rate, almost all beets in the Southwest will be sown before Easter. In the north and east, the subsoil is still on the wet side in many places. There are also several growers here who first want to apply a gift of organic fertilizer.
snail damage
The beets that were sown at the beginning of March are now on top. The IRS warns of snail damage on the fields where the beets are above. It is recommended to regularly check for infestation by snails up to and including the two-leaf stage. Plots that are coarser are especially sensitive to snails in humid conditions.
The IRS also announced today (Thursday, April 1) that it would also start the lice counts. Provided that the beets are on top of the counting plots. The results can be seen on the aphid warning card† To determine the damage threshold, all green aphids are counted. If the damage threshold is reached in an area on several plots, the growers receive a text message from Cosun to check their own plots. This is to prevent damage by the yellowing virus later in the season.
