Easter a little busier for carrot, less than usual

2 April 2021 - Jurphaas Lugtenburg

There is still no great demand for carrots. Several rinsers have processed slightly more carrots this week for the long Easter weekend. But it hasn't been as busy as other years around this time. This is also reflected in the price of B carrot in particular.

Several traders partly attribute the lagging demand to the European catering closure. Sales in this channel are only partially compensated by additional sales in retail. Until now, the Dutch carrot has been on the expensive side for export to Eastern Europe. The falling price may offer opportunities to stimulate exports to that destination.

Processing continues steadily
Even though traders have been reporting for weeks that the trade has been fairly quiet, quite a bit of carrot has secretly been processed. According to various parties, the stock that is still in cold storage is certainly no larger or even smaller than in other years. Concerns about the quality of the carrot in storage continue to play an important role. Traders say that quite a lot of carrots are offered that have a spot or something similar on them. Marketing this carrot is difficult and a lot of it is washed away.

The price of B-carrot is dropping somewhat
The price of B-carrot is dropping slightly this week. This week the quotation is €23 per 100 kilos. That is €2 lower than last week. The top of the DCA quotation is €24 per 100 kilos. There is a large spread between the different traders, caused by the ultimate destination of the carrot. Some traders can therefore pay up to €27 per 100 kilos for very good carrots, while others stop at €22. The C-carrot quotation remains the same this week at €22 per 100 kilos. It should be noted that little C-carrot is traded.
