Field margins as an Ecological Focus Area

8 April 2021

Greening is an integral part of the current CAP system of hectare payments. In the new Common Agricultural Policy from 2023, the role of greening measures will be even greater. One-year and multi-year field margins are a practical form of greening that does not stand in the way of operational management and can actually strengthen it.

In 2021, within the greening rules, a choice will be made from the Arable farming strip package. At least 30% of the EA surface (Ecological Focus Area) must consist of managed field margins. A managed field edge counts with a factor of 1,5 and must be sown before 15 May with a field margin mixture.

Added value of field margins
A flower-rich field margin is of great added value along the edges of fields and in cultivation-free zones along waterways. With minimal loss of productive soil you give the appearance of the landscape a major boost. A successful field margin increases biodiversity, stimulates natural enemies of pest insects and reduces drift and runoff.

Sow field margin mixtures with a proven high success rate, such as LG Bloemrijk 1 (annual) and LG Bloemrijk 2 (perennial). Order them from your supplier or online in our webshop.
