Does cold spring still surprise carrots?

7 May 2021 - Jurphaas Lugtenburg

The carrot trade is babbling on at the moment. The demand for carrots at most traders and rinsers is similar or slightly higher than last week. The market is not bad, but it is certainly not the case that all brakes are released.

Eastern European buyers buy quite a bit of Dutch carrots. Several traders report that they have traded slightly more with destinations in Eastern Europe this week than last week. The customers there are very sensitive to the price. They look around carefully to see where they can get the cheapest carrot.

Growers expect more
This is at odds with the expectations of the growers. Arable farmers see a cold spring, early carrots that are barely grown and a limited supply of good carrots. They therefore expect a higher price for the carrot.

The cold spring certainly keeps people busy. Traders do not dare to make concrete predictions - especially after the exceptional situation caused by corona - but the general expectation is that the old harvest will be used for a fairly long time.

This has not gone unnoticed by the Spanish growers. There are rumors that some buyers left and right have switched to the Spanish new harvest. But according to several traders, the price is well above that of the storage carrot and the prices of old and new carrots are not yet really coming together. Spanish growers rely on a later harvest in other early growing areas and hold on to current prices.

Price remains the same
Carrot prices in the DCA quotation have remained the same as last week. B-carrot averages €23 per 100 kilos. Prices of up to approximately €26 per 100 kilos are quoted for very good carrots. That is only a small part of what is traded. Lower prices are paid for the slightly inferior carrots. The price of C-carrot remains the same as in recent weeks at €22 per 100 kilos. Demand is lagging behind other years due to the partial closure of catering establishments.
