Organic markets ring out the season without a bang

13 May 2021

The markets for organic table potatoes, onions and carrots have not been very spectacular in recent weeks. At the end of the season it can sometimes pop, but that was not the case this year. In conclusion, you can say that the season went according to plan without incident.

The ingredients were there for a hectic season. Such as the corona crisis, but this ultimately seems to have had little effect on price developments. And lower yields or quality issues have not led to an imbalance between supply and demand. There is still product here and there, so the owners may still benefit from it or, conversely, get the lid on their nose. As far as the DCA Indication prices for organic carrots, onions and table potatoes are concerned, the season ends here.

Business in onions
According to a packer, there is still activity in the organic onion market. This concerns parties from the contract trade that is still going well. Half is still Dutch and the rest comes from Egypt. 'There seems to be a smooth transition from Dutch product to onions from other destinations. And in this endgame everyone seems to be able to sell their product well.'

There is therefore no longer much free trade and the price indication remains the same as last week. So €40 to €43 for >30% coarse. And from €38 to €41 per 100 kilos for large onions.

No noticeable movements in table potatoes
The market for table potatoes is also in its last few weeks. Although, according to a trader, 'there are still plenty of batches left'. The question is whether all this will be processed, but this trader is not really worried because there are still some weeks to go. As far as free trade is concerned, it is now pretty quiet and prices do not make any noticeable movements. The market is therefore regarded as unchanged. This means that the DCA Indication price for crumbly and firm cooking remains at €25 to €28 per 100 kilos.

Peen is coming to an end
All of the above also applies to the market for organic carrots. Everything is slowly coming to an end there. The last few trades seem to be mostly moving between the price range as it has been for a while now. So at €25 to €30 per 100 kilos.

A clear explanation of these indication prices and how they are established can be found here: the organic quotations of DCA-Markets† As soon as sufficient Dutch product is freely traded again, DCA-Markets will start listing again for the 2021 harvest.
