First hurdle taken in glyphosate extension

June 16, 2021 - Jurphaas Lugtenburg

After a series of lawsuits in the US and a public discussion in the EU about the risks of glyphosate, Bayer - the producer of Roundup - has received good news. Glyphosate is safe and meets the requirements for public health, as laid down in the European Regulations on Plant Protection Products (PPP).

This is the conclusion reached by the Assessment Group on Glyphosate (AGG). The authorization of glyphosate will expire in 2022 and for an extension of the authorization the active substance must be re-evaluated. At the request of the European Commission, France, Hungary, the Netherlands and Sweden reviewed the file for re-approval. That dossier contains a large number of studies that must demonstrate that the substance is safe and effective.

The race is not over yet
The draft assessment report on glyphosate presented by the AGG yesterday (Tuesday 15 June) has been presented to the European Food Safety Authority EFSA and the Chemicals Authority ECHA. They are responsible for a consultation with assessment authorities of the Member States and a public consultation. EFSA then advises the European Council of Agriculture Ministers on an extension of the authorization of glyphosate.
