First forecast sugar beet yield known

2 July 2021 - Jurphaas Lugtenburg

Cosun expects a sugar yield of just below the long-term average for the current season. The German sugar producer Südzucker estimates the yields somewhat more positively and expects them to be at least on the long-term average in Europe.

The expected sugar yield for the Netherlands this season is 13,6 tons per hectare. That is slightly below the 5-year average, which stands at 13,8 tons per hectare. The sowing date does not differ from previous years, but the growing point of the beets is about a week later than what can be expected based on the sowing date. Cosun attributes this to the relatively cold spring. The cooperative warns growers to be alert to leaf fungi. The risk of fungi is high at the moment, while keeping the leaves healthy during this period is crucial, according to Cosun.

Südzucker assumes "that we will achieve at least an average yield", agricultural director Thomas Kirchberg reported in the Heilbronner Stimme. Due to a favorable temperature and sufficient precipitation in May and June, the beets have grown rapidly.
