The first winter onions have been harvested and the 2021 trading season has started. However, much trade is not yet taking place on the new harvest.
Trading in the old 2020 harvest is almost over. There are only a few batches of conventional onions left that are still looking for a buyer. The industrial market has also almost switched to new harvest.
The stock exchange committee in Emmeloord is the only one of 3 listing committees that still produces a listing. They characterize the yellow onion market as lackluster and attach a quotation of €14 to €16,50. The bale prices for the old harvest remain unchanged compared to the previous week, an overview of the bale prices can be found here: DCA listing Bale price Onions.
Rain delays harvest
Last week's rain caused a delay in the harvesting of winter onions. However, a few plots have already been cleared, these onions still have to be processed, so no bale prices are yet known for the new harvest.
It is not really busy yet in the trade for the new harvest. Many processors already have outstanding obligations for winter onions and early onion onions. This often happens with partial constructions, where growers and processors share in the revenues and costs. Packers first clear their obligations before purchasing new onions on the open market. As a result, there is no trade in the new harvest yet and no prices for the new harvest have yet been announced.
