German arable farmer catches more with grains

17 August 2021 - Jurphaas Lugtenburg

The prices that German arable farmers receive for their products rose by 8,6% in June compared to the same month a year earlier. The increase is largely due to higher grain prices. The potato market shows a completely different picture.

The average grain price in June this year is 27,9% higher than a year earlier, reports the German statistical office Destatis. Commercial crops (to which Destatis attributes, among other things, rapeseed and sugar beet) have risen even more sharply in price. On average 32,5%, with rapeseed as the absolute leader. That crop has become 41,8% more expensive compared to June last year due to good demand and limited stock.

Potato price starts to recover
Last month was less favorable for potato growers. According to Destatis data, potato prices have been falling since September 2019 compared to the same month a year earlier. in June 2021, the average potato price (free, contract and everything in between) fell by 56,8% compared to June 2020.

A large supply of the old harvest puts pressure on the price. Destatis does see a cautious recovery in the potato market. Compared to May, the price increased by 2,2% in June, partly due to disappointing yields of early potatoes. Prices for vegetable crops (including carrots and onions) fell by an average of 0,7% in June compared to a year earlier.
