Large differences in weather between the European regions have a significant local influence on the expected yields of the crops. Nevertheless, changes in yields at EU level are limited according to the JRC MARS Institute in the August crop monitor.
For potatoes and beets, among other things, the current weather conditions in the Benelux and large parts of Germany and France are good for the development of biomass. More hours of sunshine are desirable, according to the JCR.
Average to good potato year
With 43,4 tons per hectare, the JRC MARS Institute expects a slightly above-average harvest in the Netherlands for potatoes. Yields of 42,2 and 42,8 tons per hectare are forecast for Belgium and France respectively. That is about 5% above the 5-year average. Germany is the European leader with an expected average yield of 45,1 tons per hectare, no less than 8,4% above the 5-year average yield.
For beets, the yield forecast in by far the largest part of Europe is around or above the 5-year average. Lower yields on average are only forecast in Southeastern Europe. At 86,9 tons per hectare for the Netherlands, the harvest forecast for beet is exactly 4,9% above the 5-year average.
Above average grain harvest
Despite reports of disappointing grain yields, the European JRC MARS Institute in the August bulletin still assumes a grain harvest that is 6% above the 5-year average. That is 0,4% lower than in the July edition. For wheat, the expected yield is 5,98 tons per hectare, 5% above the 5-year average. But 1,2% lower than in the previous bulletin. Due to the wet conditions during the harvest, the quality of the grains is a concern in northwestern Europe.
