The trade in organic potatoes, carrots and onions is slowly starting. On the demand side it is still quiet due to the holidays and on the supply side the main harvest has yet to start. The current year has so far been characterized by high disease pressure. The yields of potatoes and onions in particular seem to be disappointing.
The first seed onions are coming onto the market, but the vast majority are still onion sets. Due to the cold spring, the onion season started about 2 weeks later and the acreage for onion sets has been expanded, also in Germany, there is now a relatively large supply of onion sets that first have to leave before space is created for the sowing onions. There are big differences in quality with the onion sets. There are beautiful batches in between, but there are also onions with relatively many (internal) problems that go to the industry.
Few sowing onions
The yields of seed onions seem to be disappointing, but the harvest has yet to get off to a good start. For the quality, it will be exciting whether the necks will be able to dry quickly enough. Prices for seed onions are still difficult to give due to the limited supply. A very cautious indication is between €28 and €32 per 100 kilos for onions, which usually go into storage at the buyer.
Good growing season for carrots
The organic market for carrots is very similar to conventional carrots. The supply is on the large side in relation to the demand. The quality of the carrots has been excellent so far and the yields are not disappointing either. It remains to be seen how the quality remains. The wet weather that is still forecast could be a bummer for the quality later in the season. Prices mentioned are between €25 and €30 per 100 kilos.
Nice potatoes and few kilos
The yields of organic potatoes are generally disappointing. Due to the high phytophthora pressure, many plots burned down prematurely. Also the resistant varieties are not immune to the evil. In dry years with low disease pressure, it is possible to keep the robust varieties phytophthora-free, but in a year like this there is no stopping them.
The number of tons is generally disappointing. In various fields, the agrias are in no way inferior to the new robust and resistant varieties. Due to the early haulm killing, the sorting is fine. Varieties that grow few tubers have an advantage for sorting. Due to the limited supply, the price is at a relatively high level. The DCA Indication Price is between €70 and €80 per 100 kilos, for both waxy and floury potatoes.
