Growers dare to wait for the organic market

14 October 2021 - Jurphaas Lugtenburg - 2 comments

The farmer has confidence in the organic potato and onion market. The fact that there is not much demand at the moment does not change that, according to traders. The harvest is safely behind the shelves and growers are waiting quietly until they get a good offer.

The situation is different with organic carrots. The harvest is in full swing and yields and quality are generally good. That puts pressure on the market.

Little trade in potatoes
Not much trade is done in organic potatoes. That doesn't mean nothing is happening. Traders gauge how much and what quality is where and how much more needs to be purchased to meet the obligations, because it is clear that the supply is on the tight side.

The trade still has to get used to the prices that the farmer has in mind. A few weeks ago during the harvest, there were still growers who wanted to go down to save storage costs and/or have money in the bank immediately. The costs for storage have been incurred, there is little or no compelling offer from problem parties and growers have confidence in the market. The farmer therefore keeps the door closed if the price is not right. The DCA Indication Price has therefore increased slightly compared to last week to €52 to €62 per 100 kilos for both floury and waxy potatoes.

Growers hold the onions
The organic onion market is fairly quiet. Here too it is mainly a matter of waiting. Revenues and therefore the stock are disappointing. But in addition to supply, demand also plays an important role in price formation. The demand for onions is limited at the moment. Foreign buyers largely rely on local products and are not yet on the market. As with the potatoes, the growers have confidence in the market and dare to wait. The DCA Indication price for the large onions increases slightly compared to last week with €38 to €42 per 100 kilos. For the fine grade, the price remains the same at €36 to €39 per 100 kilos.

Lots and good carrots
The quality and yields of the carrot are generally excellent. This means that the market for organic carrots is quite different from potatoes and onions. The demand for carrots is emotionally picking up according to some traders, but it is certainly not going through a storm. In any case, the increased interest is not reflected in the price. The DCA Indication Price remains the same as last week at €15 to €16 per 100 kilos.

Organic farming is bullshit

Don't say that too loud now. Other Piet, the more companies switch, the less the supply in kg, less supply also gives a higher price for the non-organic farmer, after all, there is less land every year, so things are going in the right direction .
