Interview Peter Bergsma

'Watching the futures market every day'

20 October 2021 - Redactie Boerenbusiness

Every weekday Pieter Bergsma looks up at least once Boerenbusiness to the state of affairs in the futures market. He does this to get a faster indication of things that will happen in the agricultural sector. Bergsma has been making grateful use of his Akkerbouw Pro subscription for more than 9 years.

Bergsma has an arable farm of more than 600 hectares in Friesland in partnership with his wife, sister-in-law and brother. In addition, he is still in a partnership with his son. "But that is seen as a whole within the company."

What does the company consist of?
"Besides us, the company consists of about 12 permanent employees. However, during the period of the peonies and the cutting of the flowers, there are 40 to 80 people around, although this is of course contract work. potatoes, starch, sugar beet, grain, spring barley, gladiolus, peonies, lilies and maize, and our company also has an entire laundry with storage bunkers, a seed sorting line and a washing line for flower bulbs and peonies. other companies in the sector. In addition, in my view, the following also applies in the agricultural sector: mass is cash, you have to turn a lot of turnover to earn something. In addition to arable farming, we also have a contracting company, with which we perform contract work for livestock farmers. It all started at my father's 30 hectare arable farm that I and my brother started in 1984."

What's the benefit of the Akkerbouw Pro subscription?
"Using the Arable farming Pro subscription I am fairly quickly aware of the latest things that are happening in the sector. Current events are very important, especially in a company like ours that keeps it running at home. Boerenbusiness responds well to the diversity within our company. It is a very broadly oriented platform, on which you can get a quick indication of the developments and events in the sector at the moment."

"I watch the futures market on .'s website every day Boerenbusiness† There are many publications that I can make good use of, because I myself sometimes do something on the futures market. With the potatoes that we grow within the company, we have sold 80% for a fixed price and the rest depends on how the market is at that time. In addition, we also have another part of our company in contract cultivation, but here too it is important that the people we grow for are able to market this well."

How do you see the future?
"In my view, there are plenty of opportunities for the future, we have been operating for over 40 years. When we built it up, it was much more difficult in our situation. You start with little and that takes 20 years to get it right. At the moment, the challenge is with the acquisition that, it seems now, my son will do in the future."

"This is a company that is very large and with so much capital in it; your own wealth can also be your enemy at that moment. What you are also facing now and in the future is the nitrogen story, Natura 2000 and the resistance to crop protection Finally, I want to continue to focus in the future on the work distribution that is currently taking place. We obviously want to avoid as many failures as possible, just like everyone else. Using the latest facts on Boerenbusiness I hope to continue running my business in this way in the future!"
