Look, look, don't buy on organic market

28 October 2021 - Jurphaas Lugtenburg - 3 comments

High expectations and little trade. This is how the market for organic potatoes and onions can best be described. There is also little trade in organic carrots, but due to the good harvest, the mood is less optimistic here.

Growers and buyers both know that the yields of potatoes and onions have been disappointing. Stocks are tight and processors are informing left and right about what is available. This does not yet lead to concrete transactions. Growers are waiting quietly in the hope that prices will rise further, while traders are cautious about buying. Partly because they want to see how well demand is holding up, but also because of slight doubts about the quality of the batches that are currently being offered.

Will there be a demand for onions?
The market for organic onions is slowly starting to move. Demand is starting to come from Germany and England in particular, but growers are still reluctant to sell. The price for organic onions has taken a step up. The DCA Indication Price for coarse grade onions is €48 to €52 per 100 kilos this week. For the fine grading, the indicative price is €45 to €50 per 100 kilos.

Look, look, don't buy is the game on the organic potato market. Something does happen, but it mainly concerns smaller quantities that change hands. Processors replenish the work stock where necessary, but not much more than that. The lower end of the DCA Indication Price does rise from €52 last week to €55 per 100 kilos this week. The top end remains the same at €62 per 100 kilos.

Lots of carrots
The carrot trade continues to run smoothly. Although the harvest period for organic carrots is approaching the end, there is still quite a lot of ex-land supply. High yields and good quality continue to dominate the market. The DCA Indication Price remains unchanged at €15 to €16 per 100 kilos.

25% organic, the rest Russian import. Long live the green deal. Putin is already rubbing his hands. Europe dependent on gas, food and what else next?
