Farmer and trade approach each other on organic market

18 November 2021 - Jurphaas Lugtenburg

The mood on the organic market for arable crops is quite variable. The one on the potato market is excellent. Processors are good at the market and are increasingly meeting the farmer. The mood for onions is good for the longer term, but the current supply of somewhat lesser onions is tempering the mood. On the carrot market, the search for buyers is due to the wide range.

The demand for potatoes is picking up. Several processors see the stock dwindling and go to the farmer to buy potatoes. This gives the grower's confidence a boost, which is reflected in the prices. Prices are already mentioned of €70 per 100 kilos and more. These are, by the way, lots with extras, such as Demeter certification, delivery in big bags or auction crates, or lots where the undersize has already been sorted out.

Give and take
The undersize is in any case something to be aware of this season, according to various traders. It is customary to settle for potatoes in sizes 35 – 65. Due to the limited supply, there is also quite a lot of interest this year in potatoes that are just below size. It is a bit of give and take from both the farmer and the trader, but then (part of) the undersize does not always have to be deducted from the final settlement as tare. The DCA Indication Price has taken a big step up and this week amounts to €62 to €68 per 100 kilos. Last week it was €57 to €62 per 100 kilos.

Good onions are held
The mood on the onion market is fluctuating. Beautiful lots can be found, but farmers with such onions are in no rush to sell. An important part of the onions that are now being offered are slightly less. Those onions are still improving (read: drying in storage), but are depressing the mood in the trade a bit. This is not surprising for this time of year and according to most traders the mood will also improve when these parties disappear from the market towards the end of the year. The DCA Indication Price for onions remains the same as last week with €47 to €50 for the fine grade and €50 to €53 for the coarse grade.

Printed mood
The exception to the predominantly positive mood on the organic market is carrots. A wide supply of good carrots in Northwestern Europe is weighing heavily on the trade. The Netherlands must have it for an important part of the export. Demand from abroad has been limited so far. As a result, there is little trade. The DCA Indication Price this week amounts to €15 to €16 per 100 kilos.
