Quality is leading in the organic market

2 December 2021 - Jurphaas Lugtenburg

There are few shifts in the market for organic potatoes, onions and carrots. The supply of good batches of potatoes and onions is limited. However, the scarcity does not mean that prices will continue to rise, insiders warn. Carrot remains a bit of an odd one out. Customers have the choice of parties there.

Good potatoes remain in demand. The offer is just disappointing. There just aren't many pretty parties. The sizing is especially disappointing. As one trader puts it: "You can't sell what isn't there." For growers, this can sometimes lead to a nasty surprise. The price may be good, but if a relatively large amount of tare is lost, the net settlement is a bit disappointing. The DCA Indication Price is €62 to €68 per 100 kilos for both floury and waxy potatoes.

The quality of onions is not always easy
The trade in onions continues to run smoothly, but some insiders indicate that buyers have become a little more careful with buying. That's because there are relatively many quality issues. Defects that are clearly visible and can be sorted out are not such a problem, the processors can deal with them. The difficulty is with the internal problems, such as water sheets. These are difficult to extract, but they do cause problems, especially for exports to England, an important buyer at the moment. The DCA Indication Price for onions remains the same as last week at €47 to €50 per 110 kilos for fine grades and €50 to €53 for coarse ones.

The mood on the carrot market remains subdued. A large supply ensures that buyers have the carrot to choose from. A small bright spot is that the industry remains fairly well on the market. It is true that the main price is not paid for carrots with that destination, but it helps to get carrots off the market and thus to create air. The DCA Indication Price remains at €15 to €16 per 100 kilos.
