The mood on the organic potato and onion market remains good. Yet not much trade is done. Buyers are on the cautious side and farmers are not exactly in a rush to sell. They see that there are not many attractive parties hanging above the market and think that prices are more likely to rise than fall.
The quality of the products does cause surprises for some growers. The trade is willing to pay for good potatoes and onions, but then they really have to meet the specified specifications. This often means that the tare is higher than what the farmer had taken into account.
Searching for good parties
The trade in onions is very quiet at the moment. According to various traders, it is difficult to get good onions. This is primarily because fewer onions have been harvested. This is well known and creates confidence among farmers. 'A buyer will pass by', is the prevailing thought. According to insiders, that is also true, but then the grower has to be sure that onions are really good. The DCA Indication Price remains stable at €47 to €50 per 100 kilos for the fine grade and €50 to €53 for the coarse.
Good potatoes are also good to get rid of at the moment. But as with onions, the following applies here: there is not much on offer. In the current market, there is also a reasonable demand for the undersize. Some insiders give the tip to make agreements about this during the sale. Ask the buyer what is possible and perhaps focus on the highest price for the potatoes in size 35-65, but more on the best price for the entire batch. The DCA Indication Price remains the same as last week and ranges from €62 to €68 per 100 kilos for both the floury and waxy potatoes.
Is there any movement in the carrot trade?
The carrot market continues to fall out of tune. The supply is not a problem here, good carrots are readily available. It is difficult for growers to find a buyer. However, the result is the same: there is not much trade. Some traders do report that more information is being provided from Germany and although that does not lead to much concrete trade yet, that may cause some excitement in the coming weeks. The DCA Indication Price remains unchanged at €15 to €16 per 100 kilos.
