Quality of the farm carrots becomes a concern

10 December 2021 - Jurphaas Lugtenburg

It continues to be difficult on the carrot market. Rinsers have sufficient carrots and are only available on the market to a limited extent. The supply exceeds the demand. It is not the case that nothing is exported, but the volumes do relatively little.

There is still a supply of carrots from the field, but there are major differences in quality. You have to search for beautiful carrots that have been harvested with the clamp, but there are still buyers for them. It is very difficult to find a destination for carrots that have actually been left for too long and are now being harvested with a potato harvester - which certainly does not improve the quality. The relatively long off-shore season is something that some insiders are concerned about. The cold stores are full and that stock is only used to a limited extent. For the best results, processors should completely switch to carrots from storage.

Few exports
Countries from Eastern Europe have sufficient carrots on their home market. The Czechs and Poles, for example, do buy in the Netherlands, but this concerns relatively small quantities as a guarantee to ensure that they do not run out of carrots around the holidays. They are also very competitive on price. It is also quiet in overseas exports. Senegal has closed its borders and countries such as Mauritania or Cape Verde are doing something, but not enough to really change the mood on the market.

Carrot prices remain stable compared to last week. The DCA quotation for B-carrot is €5 per 100 kilos and for C-carrot at €4,50 per 100 kilos. It should be noted that little trade is done.
