McDonald's takes drastic measures to solve the French fries shortage in Japan. The American forwarding company Flexport has announced that it has received an order to transport potatoes from the US to Japan by air. Flexport will fly three Boeing 747 loads of potatoes to Japan, CEO Ryan Petersen announced via Twitter.
According to Bloomberg, the shortage of French fries in Japan was caused by flooding in the Canadian port of Vancouver and the disruptions in logistics chains due to the corona crisis. As a result, McDonald's was forced to serve only small portions of chips from December 24. The American fast food chain did not want to confirm or deny the Flexport message to Bloomberg. The spokesperson has said that it is expected that medium and large portions of fries will be back on the menu in Japan from December 31.
The shortage of chips is not limited to McDonald's in Japan, however. New York burger restaurant JG Melon announced last week that it was removing the cottage fries from its menu due to delivery problems. There are also difficulties with deliveries here and there for other products such as cream cheese and chicken.
