Good mood does not lead to extra trade

30 December 2021 - Jurphaas Lugtenburg

The confidence in the market among organic arable farmers is good. That just doesn't lead to trading in the last week of the year. Insiders are currently describing the market as quiet, which is not surprising for the week between Christmas and New Years.

In the carrot trade, according to insiders, it remains to be seen how well demand from Germany and Eastern Europe holds up. In the run-up to Christmas, demand from these regions picked up. This week it is a bit quieter. In the new year it will become clear whether the demand was prompted to build up some extra stock for the holiday period or because the supply in Eastern Europe is starting to shrink. The DCA Indication Price remains the same as last week at €17 to €19 per 100 kilos.

Search for quality
We are looking for good organic onions and growers who have good batches in the shed are waiting in the hope that prices will rise a little further in the second half of the season. There is often a quality problem to a greater or lesser extent in various batches of onions that are currently being offered. This ranges from bacterial rot and fusarium to onions that sprout. This dampens the mood on the market a bit, despite the fact that the supply of onions - especially of good quality - is not enough. The DCA Indication Price remains the same as last week with €50 to €53 per 100 kilos for the fine grade and €52 to €56 per 100 kilos for the coarse grade.

As with onions, the supply of good organic potatoes is also not over. The biggest bottleneck, according to insiders, is size sorting. Due to the high disease pressure, various parties were unable to grow sufficiently, resulting in fine potatoes. According to some insiders, there is a remarkably good demand for floury potatoes this season. "Customers who normally only want firm-boiling varieties are now also interested in floury potatoes," said a trader. The DCA Indication Price remains at €62 to €68 per 100 kilos for both floury and waxy potatoes.
