Good start to the new year on the organic market

6 January 2022 - Jurphaas Lugtenburg

To meet the demand for organic potatoes, carrots and onions, buyers have to dig deeper into their pockets. This is not because trade has picked up, but mainly because growers keep the door closed if the price is not right. Quality is one of the most important themes here.

Good organic potatoes are not up for grabs. Due to the tight supply, however, sorters can also use potatoes that they would ignore in a year with sufficient supply. This of course has consequences for the tare percentages, because they are considerably higher than normal. The DCA Indication price for potatoes has increased significantly this week and amounts to €70 to €74 per 100 kilos for both floury and waxy potatoes.

No rush
Growers with good onions in the shed are not in a hurry to sell. The quality of some of the onions that is now coming onto the market leaves something to be desired. For defects that are easy to sort out, that is not such a problem. Although it does cost the capacity of the (optical) sorter, it is possible to make a good end product. The problem is onions with subcutaneous defects. These are almost impossible to remove and cause problems for the customer. The supply of lesser onions is depressing the overall mood in the market, according to insiders. The DCA Indication Price therefore remains the same as last week: €50 to €53 for the fine grade and €52 to €56 for the coarse grade.

It is not very busy in the carrot trade, but the market does feel friendlier. Demand is reasonable and is still picking up. Since the start of this season, the market has been dominated by good yields and a large stock. That stock has not been eliminated yet, but there are some sounds that the stock may be a lot smaller than players have long assumed. The DCA Indication Price is €19 to €21 per 100 kilos.
