Fertilizer manufacturer Yara is phasing out the import of potash from Belarus. Due to the sanctions against the regime of Alexander Lukashenko, it will no longer be possible to import potash from the country from April 1, 2022.
Yara announced this today (Monday, January 10). The import of potash from Belarus - one of the largest potash producers in the world - complies with the laws and regulations, including the sanctions. Yara is now forced to phase out potash imports due to sanctions affecting other parts of the supply chain. Essential services that make potash export from Belarus possible are therefore no longer available. As a result, Yara has discontinued its procurement activities. No more potash from the country is expected to be purchased by Yara on April 1.
Disappointing development
“The effects of the current sanctions against Belarus are diminishing Yara's ability to positively impact the safety and well-being of Belarusian potash workers,” writes Svein Tore Holsether, president and CEO of Yara International in a message to the company website. “This is a disappointing development for Yara. We remain strongly committed to the safety and well-being of Belaruskali's employees. Despite the phasing out of potash procurement, Yara is committed to continuing the industrial safety program that started in 2021, in close cooperation with the independent trade union in Belaruskali and in full compliance with the applicable sanctions."
