Trade does not flatten the door at organic growers

13 January 2022 - Jurphaas Lugtenburg

The trade in organic potatoes, onions and carrots continues at a steady pace. The offer is not overly large and the prices are generally good. This creates a reasonably good mood among growers. There is a danger in that, say insiders.

Organic arable farmers have great confidence in the potato and onion market. There is a small stock above the market and the growers and the buyers know that. Nevertheless, in the current market it is certainly not the case that the trade comes to a halt at the farmer's door. Something does happen, but it is certainly not the case that traders want to get their hands on product at any cost. Some warn 'don't forget to sell them'. It would not be the first time that high expectations are ultimately not fulfilled. "It certainly can't hurt to take a gamble, but don't go all-in," said an insider.

Quiet market
The trade in onions is calm. The supply consists largely of onions of which the quality is not 'yours'. There is a demand for good onions, but growers with beautiful onions in the shed are not in a hurry to sell. The top end of the DCA Indication Price for onions increases to €50 to €55 per 100 kilos for fine grades and €54 to €58 per 100 kilos for coarse ones.

The potato sales are bouncing nicely. Sorters do a nice job, but they certainly don't get lost in orders. There are big differences in the quality of the potatoes. Due to the limited supply, the undersize is also easy to sell. As a result, various buyers are shifting the sizes on which payment is made. The DCA Indication Price this week amounts to €68 to €74 per 100 kilos.

On the carrot market, we have to wait for demand to pick up further. Germany is on the market, but there is no storm. The quality of the carrot is generally good. There is therefore no question of a compulsory offer. The DCA Indication Price remains the same as last week at €19 to €21 per 100 kilos.
