Offer is cautiously released on the organic market

20 January 2022 - Jurphaas Lugtenburg

The good mood remains in the market for organic potatoes and onions. The search continues for good potatoes and onions, and that is not unfavorable for price formation. As a result, growers are in no rush to sell. Several traders do notice that if the price is close to what the farmer has in mind, it is a bit easier to give compared to a few weeks ago.

The trade in organic potatoes is running quite smoothly at the moment. Demand is good and several growers think the time is right to say goodbye to the potatoes before the first early potatoes from the south hit the market. The quality remains a point of attention. Buyers are willing to pay hefty prices, but then top quality is expected. However, the quality varies quite a bit. Prices therefore vary widely, from €80 and more for, for example, good batches of demeter, delivered in big bags or where the undersize has been printed, while batches that are borderline in terms of specifications are traded around €70 per 100 kilos. The DCA Indication Price has stepped up from last week and stands at €72 to €76 per 100 kilos for both waxy and crumbly.

The picture of the onion trade varies a lot per trader. Some insiders report that some more trading is starting, while for others the picture does not shift much compared to the last few weeks. Traders do agree that there is not one destination that stands out. We are currently running for various customers. The mood among growers remains good, but there is a group of growers who gradually want to get rid of the onions. The availability of (good) onions nevertheless remains on the tight side. The DCA Indication Price for onions remains the same as last week with €50 to €55 per 100 kilos for fine grades and €54 to €58 per 100 for coarse ones.

With organic carrots, it is mainly a matter of looking for destinations. In Germany, the own stock of carrots seems to be declining and the price has already taken significant steps up. Despite the lower prices in the Netherlands, German buyers are still only active here to a limited extent. The preference for regional products works to the disadvantage of the Dutch growers. The DCA Indication Price remains stable at €19 to €21 per 100 kilos.
