The gross yield of the 2021 potato harvest is 11% lower than last year. Statistics Netherlands announced this today (Thurs 27 January) with the publication of the definitive harvest estimate. The onion harvest of 2021, on the other hand, is almost 12% larger than last year.
According to Statistics Netherlands, the 2021 harvest of ware potatoes amounts to 3,3 million tons. That is a decrease of 10,7% compared to a year earlier. Compared to 2020, the acreage for ware potatoes has decreased by 6,9% to 71.400 hectares. The yield per hectare for 2021 will be 46,7 tons. A year earlier that was 48,6 tons. Compared to the preliminary yield estimate of the CBS of October, the final harvest is 200.000 tons lower.
More onions
The gross yield of seed onions for the 2021 harvest will be 1,5 million tons. That is an increase of 11,7% compared to the harvest a year earlier, but 100.000 tons less than in the preliminary estimate. The average yield per hectare has remained virtually the same, namely 49,1 tons per hectare in 2021 compared to 49,0 tons a year earlier. The large harvest - only in 2011 were more onions harvested - can therefore almost entirely be attributed to the expansion of the acreage. The yield of onion sets is 321.000 tons. Just like last year, that is about a fifth of the seed onion yield.
At 82,2 tons, the hectare yield of sugar beet is also approximately the same as a year earlier, when an average of 82,1 tons was harvested. The total harvest amounts to 6,6 million tons, 100.000 tons less than in 2020. The wheat yield in 2021 at 1 million tons is the same as the previous year. The yield per hectare is 6,8% lower. On average, 8,2 tons of wheat were threshed per hectare. Barley fared better in 2021. The yield increased by 3,3% to 6,8 tons per hectare. The total yield of barley is 100.000 tons lower and comes to 200.000 tons.
