Cosun receives millions for construction of biorefinery factory

2 February 2022 - Redactie Boerenbusiness

Cosun Beet Company plans to build a biorefinery plant in Delfzijl. In this factory, beet pulp from the sugar factory in Vierverlaten is converted into new vegetable additives. This is reported by the province of Groningen, which is supporting the construction of the new factory with a subsidy of €3 million.

Cosun Beet Company, the former Suiker Unie, has been conducting research for some time to extract more ingredients and applications from beet pulp. This can improve the value of sugar beet cultivation, which should lead to a better processing yield for the factory and a higher beet price for the affiliated member growers.

The products manufactured in the new factory can be used as environmentally friendly replacements for small pieces of plastic (microplastics) in paint, detergents, toothpaste, shampoo and make-up. In addition, the factory will be fully electric and will provide more than forty jobs, reports the province of Groningen. Although Cosun Beet Company already sees the factory being built in its own statement, the final investment decision has yet to be made. This decision is expected later this year. Paul Mesters, CEO of Cosun Beet Company, says: "Over the past ten years, our company has been strongly committed to innovation, including in the field of bio-refining the sugar beet pulp. This future factory is the crowning glory of all the innovative work we have done, taking an important step towards greening society and a sustainable future."

Investing in green raw materials
The province of Groningen declares that it wants to give a major boost to the sustainability of industry and employment with the subsidy scheme Investing in Future-proof Industry. Cosun Beet Company, which has been organizing the processing of sugar beet in a factory in Groningen for decades, wants to make use of this arrangement. This scheme is intended for Groningen industrial companies that want to invest in, among other things, green raw materials, green hydrogen and the circular economy. An amount of €2021 million has been made available in 10.
