It remains quiet on the organic markets for onions and carrots. Too calm actually, the mood seems pretty fixed. The quality of the product leaves a lot to be desired in many batches. The market for organic table potatoes is not yet emerging.
This can be deduced from this week's DCA Indication Prices for organic onions, carrots and table potatoes.
Onions
The market for organic onions is still characterized as difficult. There is an increasing supply of problems with quality and this pushes the price down by a few cents. Growers want to get rid of those onions quickly. Good quality is maintained on the assumption and/or hope that later in the season the €60 per 100 kilo will still be achieved. Whether that will work is highly questionable.
Insiders set the market and therefore the DCA Indication Prices at a level of between €50 and €56 per 100 kilos for fine/medium lots from grower and delivered within three weeks. The top only applies to very beautiful parties. More or less the same applies to coarser, although that is not the point.
Carrot market slightly higher
Market is still not going very well. The trend of more problem parties entering the market is continuing. It is becoming increasingly clear that some of it will go to industry after all. This creates a real dichotomy in the market. The DCA Indication Price for class I organic carrots is €28 to €32 per 100 kilos. That is on average about €2 more than last week. More demand from Germany is expected, because the quality there also leaves something to be desired for large parts of the batches.
Potatoes
The potato market is still a bit hesitant and there is little trade. There seems to be sufficient supply in traditional export countries. There is currently even supply from France at lower prices. This has a depressing effect, as does the trade in lots with a spot.
Very nice batches that don't go wrong can make about €60 to €68 per 100 kilos. There seems to be a little more pressure, but it's not the time to gloat just yet. "We're only at the beginning of February," notes a trader. On average, the DCA Indication Prices for both waxy and floury potatoes amount to €60 to €68 per 100 kilos.
