Due to climate change, crops are increasingly confronted with stress factors. A potato crop grows best under even conditions. Stress disrupts growth, which ultimately costs yield. The new biostimulant QUANTIS® helps a crop to cope better with stress.

Stress arises from the growth stage of the plant itself. For example, tuber initiation and flowering are stressful moments for a plant (biotic stress). Stress can also be caused by heat and drought (abiotic stress). Heat stress occurs when the air temperature exceeds 25˚C for a few hours a day for a few days. This may not seem extreme, but with sufficient solar radiation, the crop temperature will quickly rise.

Drought stress is of course dependent on the soil type. Sand can hold much less water and dries out faster than, for example, clay soil. A good indication of drought stress is when you want to irrigate the crop if no precipitation is expected in the short term. Keep in mind that a well-growing crop can evaporate up to 7 millimeters of water per day. Especially on drought-sensitive soils, the crop can get into drought stress faster than you think.

How does QUANTIS work?
In heat and drought, cells react at a molecular level to mitigate their effects. This costs energy that would otherwise be used for growth. QUANTIS ensures that plants are less prone to abiotic stress factors. And through an osmo-protective function, it strengthens the plasma membrane around the cell. This allows the pressure in the cell to be maintained, so that the cell can continue to function more effectively during drought. The stomata do not close completely when stressed. As a result, CO2 exchange remains possible, i.e. photosynthesis. This ensures that growth continues despite the stress, which ultimately translates into a higher yield.

What can QUANTIS do?
The biostimulant has been tested in potatoes for several years. Not only in the Netherlands, but also in countries around us. In addition to the work in test fields, a lot of practical research has been carried out with growers. Universities have also carried out research in laboratories to investigate the effect under stress conditions. As a result, we have a clear evidence what QUANTIS can do and a substantiated advice† So when QUANTIS can be used to achieve the best result.

All studies point in the same direction: QUANTIS, used prior to a moment that is stressful for the potato crop, gives an average of 5% more yield. The application can simply be combined with regular spraying against, for example, Phytophthora. This makes applying QUANTIS an easy and very profitable investment, which pays for itself several times over.
