It continues to be difficult on the carrot market. The regular work is still going well according to various winders, but otherwise there is not much to experience. A small bright spot is that demand from Eastern Europe is picking up again.
For a few weeks, buyers from Eastern Europe bought relatively little or almost nothing in the Netherlands. That trend has now somewhat reversed and they are cautiously returning. It is not so much Poland, but countries such as the Czech Republic, Serbia and Hungary that do more trade. Not that there are significant numbers that are now disappearing there, but it does set a slightly different tone on the market.
Moderate outlook
However, insiders remain very cautious in their expectations for the further course of the season. Demand normally picks up around Easter and that could well be the case this year as well. Whether the price will increase somewhat remains to be seen. There is a wide range on offer on the market and not only in the Netherlands. That is not favorable for price formation. We really need to make sure that we are cheaper than our neighboring countries for export destinations, say some flushers. In such a market it is difficult to increase the price.
