Spring work is given priority over organic market

24 March 2022 - Jurphaas Lugtenburg

There is relatively little trade in organic potatoes, onions and carrots this week. It remains calm on the demand side and as a result there is no reason for traders to go out on a limb. Growers are busier with other activities. The sun shines and the ground is proficient; so the farmer can no longer be stopped to start with farm work.

The trade in onions is moderate. There is almost no market for free onions, because there is hardly any demand. It is difficult to say where this comes from. Some insiders think that the disappointing quality is an important factor. The customers who previously received sorted product that was on the edge, give up and look for other suppliers - for example new onions from Egypt. Or they try to sing it out as much as possible and then put less onions on the shelf. The DCA Indication Price this week amounts to €46 to €51 per 100 kilos.

More demand for carrots
The demand for carrots is increasing somewhat. Germany, in particular, is getting more on the market for Dutch carrots. It is a fighting market to get orders. The Netherlands supplies from storage and Denmark can still supply carrots covered with straw from the field. Both are fighting for the same customers and price is the deciding factor. The Dutch rinsers are willing to buy, but only if the price is right and enough kilos can be rinsed from a crate. If there is less than 400 kilos in one box, the costs for rinsing and sorting are too high. The DCA Indication Price remains the same as last week: €18 to €22 per 100 kilos.

It is quiet on the potato market. Also here is a limited question. Insiders aren't too concerned about that, by the way. "It is now a lukewarm phase, but that could improve if there are still some holes in the coming weeks," according to a trader. The DCA Indication Price has fallen, compared to last week, to €57 to €61 per 100 kilos.
