Overseeding is lurking in sugar beets

14 April 2022 - Jesse Torringa - 16 comments

Last week's rainfall has put an end to the smooth sowing of sugar beets. Almost 80% has been sown, but due to the poor weather conditions it is important to keep a close eye on the sown plots and field emergence.

The sowing of sugar beet went very smoothly and successfully in the past period. It is now week 15 and there is a small 80% sown with sugar beet. The sowing has not yet been completed anywhere, but more than 95% has been sown in Zeeland and the Flevopolder. To date, the least has been sown in the northeast.

Flash start
Due to regional differences in precipitation, sugar beet sowing cannot be resumed immediately. It is expected that sowing will only be possible after the weekend in the wettest regions. A big contrast in sowing dates, because half of the seeds had already been sown at the end of March due to the beautiful and dry weather. In week 12 in particular, things went smoothly and the sown area increased from 13,7 to 52,2%. Due to this difference in sowing, the average sowing dates seem to be around the average of recent years. The average sowing dates for the past three years were on April 6 and 7.

In total, 83.500 hectares of seed have been sold this season. That is about 1% more than last season. In addition, Cosun Beet Company is currently not receiving any signals that this area is going to decrease, because the small amount that is sown a little extra or less is about the same.

Oversowing is possible
Relatively few plots have been sown in recent years. To date, the counter stands at 278 hectares, with frost (69%) as the main reason. However, due to the weather influences of last week, the acreage for overseeding can increase considerably. Damage to germinated seed and young beet plants has been reported from multiple regions from frost, water on land and perhaps the biggest problem right now: crusting. This is slowly but surely becoming visible on plots that are already graying out.

According to Cosun Beet Company, it is unclear how many hectares should be sown. This has to do with the fact that part of the seed may still have germination capacity and is still on the way. Also because of the frost there may already have been something that is gone by now. They therefore call on the growers to keep a close eye on their plot.

Whether overseeding is necessary depends on the damage to the beet plants, the average plant number and the distribution of this plant number. With an even distribution over the plot, a good yield can still be achieved with a plant number of 40.000 to 50.000 plants, reports IRS.

Just say before 2 May when you want to harvest, because the holidays are approaching and the Cosun men will then take long-term leave and there will be no time to make plans in July and August.

Yes, and of course we all already know how the beets will do, let alone come up haha!

nobody sees this problem now everything is just pressed down the throat.
seed coting off a lot of hassle that should not be necessary, in short 40 years back in time, crust/frost in recent years very difficult if there is a price of 55/60 euros at beet price but come to this balance that has to be done very quickly up otherwise the factory won't be full anymore I guess

Isn't it high time that the board took its responsibility and resigned. When I come home with such results, the bank places me in crisis management. Or sell Cosun. With these financial returns, beet cultivation cannot continue.

cooperative farmers think what they have to say you only become a member of the members' council if you obediently walk behind the big men and make demands on the farmers pardon members seems like politics or even worse.

for mr. van de Lught and his mates are going to be exciting times because in my opinion what they did to their members last season should not happen again [Saying that they have made progress where in fact it comes down to an average deficit of 1000 euros/ha at the members] Say they have sold all sugar at the beginning of the season when prices were still very low, knowing that this is below cost; I find very disturbing. The fact that there is not more knowledge available in the business field is also very worrying. You'd almost think you're dealing with a bunch of fringe morons. It will be quite a job for Van de Lught and his mates to keep the frogs in the wheelbarrow, otherwise they will also have to find contractors to grow sugar beets for them, just like with the chicory

Strong language, but you are absolutely right, something will have to change within COSUN, so last season was very disappointing, you were simply short of 1000 euros per hectare to speak of a nice cultivation.

We'll see how this year goes, but the start is a difficult one for many growers.
A number of growers who have had to reseed and/or have watered can already prepare their loss account unless the beet price drops to around 60 euros, but that is a utopia.

Count on a maximum of 40 euros next season and then I won't get a grain balance with 80 tons of beets.

And then there will be a discussion whether COSUN can oblige you to start growing beets!!

I will no longer be ordering beet seed in pre-sale this summer, but I will first see what Cosun has to offer and if that is not enough, a red cross will be drawn over it.

Membership receipts simply give an obligation to deliver
We didn't have this in the quota era, but it had to be included if necessary

the sugar price has easily increased by 50%, so a plus of 16 euros participations will also yield 4 euros more, so last year 40 euros this year easily 60 euros it is less than they have failed at cosun it is more than it is not that bad

Selling sugar in advance and not having fixed the gas price, a child without a primary school diploma can think that this goes wrong.

Fortunately, there are toppers here who know exactly how to do it with their 10-hectare business.

The best helmsmen are on shore, but you can expect a board of directors and the Board of Directors to have more knowledge and expertise about the market and the various developments in society than the average grower.

I get the idea, but I could be wrong that they don't really know what direction it is going within COSUN either.
