Underground things are starting to shift on the organic market

21 April 2022 - Jurphaas Lugtenburg

At first glance, there does not appear to be a major shift in the market for organic potatoes, onions and carrots. It certainly can't be called busy, but something is slumbering beneath the surface.

The market for organic onions is slowly declining. Sorters have sufficient work stock and are therefore hardly on the market to buy additional onions. Because processors have generally taken nice positions, they also feel an interest in keeping the price on it, according to an insider. The DCA Indication price for organic onions is lower than last week. There is a good spread between the top and the bottom with a range of €38 to €45 per 100 kilos for both coarse and fine batches.

There is also not much trade in organic potatoes at the moment. Buyer and seller find it difficult to find each other. Buyers screen with relatively cheap product from the Mediterranean region. Sellers/growers are still convinced that there is still a gap before a full switch to the new crop can be made. The somewhat cooler and later spring here in the Netherlands strengthens the farmers in that thought. The amounts between what the grower wants to say goodbye to and what the buyer wants them for are quite different. The market is therefore stuck and it remains to be seen who bends first. The DCA Indication price shows a plus compared to last week and amounts to €57 to €61 per 100 kilos for both waxy and floury potatoes.

Season is coming to an end
The carrot trade is going to end a bit. Spanish carrots are becoming more and more available, but they are still more expensive than the Dutch ones. For example, German flushers find Dutch carrots easy for planning. Delivery can often be made the next day, while for Spanish carrots it may take up to a week. The DCA Indication Price remains the same as last week at €18 to €22 per 100 kilos. Due to the large differences in quality even within a batch, in practice it is a bit what the madman gives.
