Biostimulants are products with natural ingredients (including amino acids). They are not plant protection products and have no direct effect on diseases or pests, but ensure that the crop can better cope with abiotic stress. Also the new biostimulant QUANTIS®.
Potatoes grow best in a temperate climate. Periods of heat or drought cause stress. The crop will then use energy to counteract the negative effects of heat and drought as much as possible. This energy is not spent for growth. When dry, the stomata are partially closed, which reduces photosynthesis. The moment of tuber formation is also a moment of stress for the plant, which costs energy. Application of Quantis just before a stress period makes plants more resilient, it ensures that growth processes continue. The end result is a higher yield.
Multi-year research proves that the use of Quantis prior to a period of stress makes the crop more resilient and prevents a disruption of growth, i.e. yield loss. Compared to untreated, an average higher yield of about 5% to 8% is obtained. This makes applying Quantis a very profitable investment, which pays for itself after a few times.
Advice:
Want to see heat and drought stress coming?
Syngenta has developed an app for this together with Wageningen University (WUR) and AppsforAgri. This app enables growers to observe per plot during the season whether the potato crop is experiencing stress. If heat or drought stress is expected on the basis of a five-day forecast, a decision can be taken to take measures. Now is the time to add Quantis to standard phytophthora sprays or to a louse or virus control.
The app is also a handy additional tool to determine – if watering is possible – when the crop requires extra water.
