The market for organic potatoes and onions is still difficult. Growers are willing to sell, but buyers are not very interested. Nevertheless, the price remains the same. Only few business is done.
A lack of demand is and remains the biggest problem in the market for organic potatoes and onions. Despite the challenging growing season, there is sufficient supply. The trend towards regional products does not help sales in the Netherlands. German buyers in particular prefer potatoes and onions from their own country. This is difficult to reconcile with the import of new crops from Egypt or Israel. "If you offer Dutch product, they want to be local, while they can just as easily import from the Mediterranean region. That is killing the Dutch market," said an insider.

The demand for organic onions is limited. Some things will go away, but it is a search for destinations, report traders. Instinctively, more onions are in growers' sheds than was calculated earlier this season. Lots that start to run out or have some other quality problem are hard to get rid of. "Until a few weeks ago it was still possible to give those onions a place, provided the price was right," according to a trader. "Growers who said 'yes' at the time got off reasonably well. Now the interest for the lesser parties is much less." Interest in good onions remains reasonably good. It is not a storm, but processors indicate that they do have a good job. The DCA Indication Price remains the same as last week, at €38 to €45 per 100 kilos.
There is also not much trade in organic potatoes. The regular work continues, but there are no real gaps towards the end of the season. Customers screen with new potatoes from Southern Europe. Some traders do have doubts about the volume that will come from there. They suspect that fewer organic potatoes are sold overall. There is especially demand for the well-known varieties. It is striking that buyers are on the market for floury potatoes throughout the season. Normally, the organic potato market is certainly one of firm-boiling varieties. The DCA Indication Price takes a small step back and amounts to €55 to €60 per 100 kilos.
