NVWA will check field sprayer with drones

23 May 2022 - Niels van der Boom - 24 comments

The Dutch Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority will go nationwide this and next week - from 23 May to 3 June controls to the application of plant protection products. Drones and a helicopter are used for this. It concerns, for example, the correct application of drift-reducing technology.

It is not the first time that the NVWA drones commitment to carry out checks. This is certainly the case for crop protection, says Jan NVWA crop protection inspector Jan Ooijman. Since 2018, this technique has been used to check the spreading of fertilizers, detect dead animals and harmful insects. Drones cannot be deployed everywhere due to flight restrictions. The NVWA also deploys a helicopter and uses satellite images.

Drift reduction requirements
The drones are mainly used to locate field sprayers. When they notice a violation, such as a tree hanging over the ditch or a lace cap that is not used, a check follows in the field. The inspectors mainly look at the drift reduction technique used – for a minimum of 75% drift reduction – and the use of a lace cap. In 2020, the 'compliance rate' with these requirements was 71%. A year earlier it was 69%.

"An additional advantage is that you see a lot more with the drone," Ooijman explains. In fruit growing you can usually not see a sprayer well because of the windbreak around the plot. You can do that with the drone. Of course, privacy is taken into account and images are anonymized. There are different requirements for supervisors than for a hobby flight with a drone."

It is highly questionable whether this is legally allowed to infringe someone's privacy.

Would it be a crime to bring down a drone over your country with an air rifle?

not punishable, but you have to pay half of the damage, at least that was a court decision.
but is it so exciting then to use the right cap?

personally I don't find it that exciting, but I'd rather they just report to the yard than I invite them for coffee with an apple point.

If we don't respond, then it's 3,2,1, nice job for the officials, gone privacy, and then the greens will too. Best is take down

It's just rotten people who come to check us, the mistrust is dripping from those people and they use all their power and have no decency in their bodies.
And that's how I'm going to treat them and it feels great!!!
For the rest I make sure that everything is in order at the company.

if it's okay then why do you have to treat them like that.
just tell them, you know the way and good luck.
distrust and being in order do not belong together.
respected and respected. that makes life a lot easier

I share that opinion, but 5 times a year each time get the same questions and have to explain it. takes you 5 days of sharing with negative energy. yes everything is fine, but the inspectors keep asking, after all, he is paid per hour and without notes his job is superfluous and because it is outsourced, he keeps asking until he has something and if I then calculate this, the consumer will get it from abroad. A good method is (that's how I do) putting a small error very visible on the werft. You get a small fine for this, but the inspector will be gone in no time, after all, he has found something and can go home.

It has nothing to do with anything to hide.

The attitude of those people is not only good for the NVWA, but also for the environmental service and the water board.

When those guys come they have an attitude of you're guilty until proven otherwise and I'm done with that.
When they come unexpectedly, I don't make any more time unless they make an appointment at a time that suits me and not the other way around.
Those guys hate that.

In addition, this promotion makes them even less popular than they already are. The distance between authorities and regulators is thus increasing with less workable space.

Indeed, reward bastard behavior with bastard behavior.
Cat those bastards or they have to report and behave normally.
I can't live a day off them.
