Finding a buyer quickly is a priority on the organic market

25 May 2022 - Jurphaas Lugtenburg

Search for a buyer and ensure that the organic potatoes and onions that are still in storage are given a destination. That is the priority for many growers. The price remains important, of course, but it does fade into the background.

There is still a market for good organic potatoes and onions. It's just a matter of searching. The shelf life is a point of attention, according to insiders. It looks good in the refrigerator, but as soon as loading and sorting is done, a germ quickly appears on the potatoes or the onions start to sprout. A slightly lesser batch that could have been mixed a month ago is now difficult to get rid of. "Now we have to maintain the quality, otherwise the demand will soon be over," said a sorter.

Moderate demand
The demand for organic onions is moderate. The price difference with the usual in the supermarket is significant and you notice that the consumer ignores organic, according to an insider. Expectations were high and several growers with good onions kept them for a long time. The question now falls. In the current market, permanent relationships are worth a lot according to a sorter. "We are now going the extra mile for our regular growers and we notice that it is appreciated, even though we can't match the price two months ago." The DCA Indication Price for both coarse and fine onions is €35 to €42 per 100 kilos.

It is also quiet on the market for organic potatoes. We can continue with the old Dutch harvest for a few more weeks, but we have to work hard to get rid of them, says a trader. Several traders indicate that the price is not decisive at the moment. Finding a destination is more important for many growers. Nevertheless, the DCA Indication Price remains the same as last week at €55 to €60 per 100 kilos.
